    Our Story

    My name is Marty Engelke.

In 2018 and 2019, I experienced two separate severe concussions. Like many brain injury survivors, I assumed recovery meant working hard and eventually getting back to normal life. Instead, I spent four years trying—and struggling—to return to work as a mail carrier.

Living with a brain injury is not always visible, but it is constant. My symptoms include headaches, brain fog, confusion, memory issues, slow processing of information, nightmares, and visual problems where my eyes don’t work together or focus well. I also deal with light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, and overstimulation. Some days are manageable; others are unpredictable.

What made things harder was realizing how little shared knowledge exists for brain injury survivors. I began attending support groups and slowly learned strategies that helped—but almost everything I learned came by chance. One person would discover something useful, another would struggle for years without ever hearing about it. Very little information felt universal, organized, or accessible. That frustrated me deeply.

At the same time, I learned something important:

    My brain still works.

I can drive. I can problem-solve. I can reflect. I can relentlessly search for ways to improve. I’ve become deeply self-aware—of my limits, of what helps, of what hurts, and of what others with brain injuries are experiencing. I may not control when my brain cooperates, but I do control how I use what I can do.

That realization became the foundation for Peaces of Mind.

Peaces of Mind is a nonprofit created to put the needs of brain injury survivors first. We aim to innovate how support groups are formed—bringing them to communities where they are needed and designing them around real-life challenges survivors face every day. No one should have to stumble through recovery alone or rely on luck to find support.

We are also working to build a localized database of resources—bringing together practical, meaningful information that can help survivors, families, and providers navigate brain injury more clearly and confidently.

This organization exists because brain injury recovery is not one-size-fits-all—but access to support, understanding, and shared knowledge should be.

    You are not broken.

    You are not alone.

And together, we can build something better.
